What is a Yeast Infection?
The vagina regularly has a fungus called yeast living in it. However, these yeast cells are in small numbers. When a vaginal yeast infection occurs, too many yeast cells are growing in the vagina. Yeast infections are very common and can cause discomfort.
What Causes a Yeast Infection?
The majority of yeast infections are caused by a yeast called Candida albicans. A healthy vagina has many bacteria, the most common being Lactobacillus acidophilus, which helps to keep other organisms-like yeast- under control. When the balance between these organisms change, yeast can grow too much and cause an array of symptoms.
Symptoms associated with a yeast infection include:
- Burning during urination
- Cottage cheese-like discharge
- Worsening of symptoms a week before menstrual period
How to Treat a Yeast Infection
Yeast infections can commonly be treated at home with over-the-counter medications such as anti-fungal creams, suppositories, or tablets. If you are pregnant and have a yeast infection, do not use any medications without consulting your doctor first.
Many individuals experience reoccurring yeast infections. If you have more than four yeast infections during one year, speak to your doctor, as the cause of these yeast infections may be another health problem.
